Preparing For Your Appointment

Before you book

To make the most of your research appointment, we suggest the following:

  • Decide on a specific topic you wish to research. Think of a few specific questions you would like to know the answer to.
  • Review our Resource List or contact the museum to see if we have the resources to answer your questions.
  • Conduct preliminary research at a public or academic library prior to research in Gresham Historical Special Collections.


Research appointments must be scheduled 24 hours in advance by phone or online. We suggest you contact the museum prior to your appointment regarding the topics you wish to research so that we can have resources ready for your when you arrive.

Reading Room materials are non-circulating. Items cannot be check-out, rented, loaned or otherwise removed from the Carl & Ada Zimmerman Reading Room.

Stacks are closed. Refrain from removing materials from reading room shelving. Materials must be requested by the researched and retrieved by Gresham Historical staff. All materials will be re-shelved by Gresham Historical staff.

All bags, large coats, and carrying cases must be placed on the provided shelves prior to conducting research. Please only take the items needed for research to the reading table. Refrain from bringing bulky items such as strollers, carts or luggage to your research appointment.

Cellphone and Camera Photography (without flash) is permitted in the research room for all collections, except the Gresham Historical Photo Collection. Do not bring other electronic recording devices to your research appointment. The Gresham Historical Society provides photocopy services and can accommodate most requests for digital files.

Silence electronic devices.

No food or drink allowed.

No weapons, including firearms, knives (including Swiss Army knives), or pepper spray are allowed.

What to bring

Pencils. No pens or markers.

Paper, laptop, or tablet. Portable computers are allowed in the Carl & Ada Zimmerman Reading Room. Electrical outlets and wireless internet are available in the research room.

We expect the Museum to be closed for several months, at least through October, as repairs due to the fire are completed. Indoor events at the Museum have been canceled for the next two months, at the least. While the weather is good, we will participate in outdoor events such as Third Thursday, and we will be setting up a booth at the Farmers Market on Saturdays. Volunteers are needed to staff these events. 

The Gresham Historical Society is a non-profit organization that is funded by memberships, grants, and fundraising events.
